History

Paige Madison joined WEMA immediately after graduation from college, inspired by a single goal – she wanted to spend her life helping people. Up until that time, there had been nothing exceptional about her or her life. She is pretty, a good but not great athlete and a good but not great student. But she has a burning desire to help people, and she idolized the WEMA elite Emergency Rescue Teams, ER-1, ER-2 and ER-3.

After she joined WEMA she did everything in her power to get assigned to one of the ER teams. Her hard work and willingness to do any job assigned to her impressed her original supervisor, and she was assigned to Emergency Rescue support staff in WEMA Headquarters in Capitalia. But her career stalled at that point. Everyone on the actual Rescue Teams had the same level of desire as Paige, but they also all were extraordinarily talented and despite all of Paige's desire, her aptitude tests didn't show exceptional aptitude for any of the skills or talents the Rescue Teams required.

Paige's roommate was a member of the combat division of ER-3, and she convinced Paige to work out with her. Paige had no interest in combat training. She wasn't a fighter and had no interest in being a fighter. But from the very first workout, it became clear that Paige was in fact an extraordinary fighter. She easily trounced her roommate, despite the roommate's extensive training and experience, and shortly afterwards, Paige was in ER combat training, where she excelled. Within a year she was part of the ER-1 combat group. For some reason, nobody was able to either attack her or anticipate her attacks effectively. It was almost as if she was out of focus, or not quite where her opponents expected her to be.

Paige is happy to be part of ER-1 - but, she really doesn't like being a combat troop. At the beginning of this story, she has taken a leave of absence and is considering turning in her resignation. She has not yet learned about her power.

Powers and Weapons

Paige is a mutant. She will soon learn that she can become invisible to every known sensor--physical, mental, scientific, magical and supernatural. Her invisibility will first manifest in her first really dangerous combat situation, and will be stress-induced, and she will remain invisible until she calms down. It will take some time before she learns to become invisible whenever she wants to.

It is quite probable that she can make other things invisible as well.

One of the variations of Paige's power has manifested itself continually throughout her life, but no one has ever been aware of it. It is difficult for observers, particularly opponents, to exactly locate Paige. She is never exactly where anyone thinks she is, even though observers are unaware of this – until they try to attack her. Then, she is always a few inches away from where she appears to be. It is almost as if she somehow manages to fight from within her opponent’s blind spot. This makes it difficult to hit her with a blow or a weapon, and it is difficult to dodge her attacks. These advantages combine to make her a formidable fighter, regardless of her relatively small stature and limited aptitude for combat. This power is effective against multiple attackers, and it works against any detector devices, even those that do not have a natural blind spot. It is even more effective against opponents who are further away from her, for example, the best snipers in the world, armed with the most accurate weapons, have never been able to hit her with single shots.

Her success in combat appears to WEMA trainers and observers to be mostly a matter of luck, because neither her physical ability or her martial arts skills justify her successes. Yet her 'luck' is incredibly consistent and powerful. WEMA experts suspect her of having a psychic power, but they think it is psychic luck.

Paige has extensive training in all types of personal combat but she is not outstanding in any area - until she is actually in combat, with an opponent. Until the time of the ongoing story, all her combat experience has been in training and virtuality, she has no combat time against an enemy.

Paige’s power of ‘hiding in the opponent’s blind spot’ is ineffective against slashing or sweeping attacks, or area effects (clouds of gas, machine gun fire).

On WEMA missions, Paige wears standard WEMA combat gear. A full body suit with built-in PFH, specially designed to work underwater and in vacuum, with built in radar and sonar. The suit also provides additionally resistance to damage, has some built in weapons and includes enhanced reality sensors in the helmet.
